Tanger Med Port’s Rise and ONE’s Expansion in Africa

One of the most notable developments in African logistics is Morocco’s Tanger Med Port, the largest container terminal on the continent. The port has seen a remarkable increase in cargo volume, ranking 17th globally in 2024 and entering the Top 20 for the first time. It is also one of the most efficient ports in the world, with a high degree of automation. According to the World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index (2023), it received an impressive 4th place ranking.

Despite its relatively short history—operations began in 2007—this massive terminal has achieved rapid growth. Strategically located on the Strait of Gibraltar, the gateway to the Mediterranean, and supported by Morocco’s stable political environment, Tanger Med Port stands as a successful example of investment-driven development.

As a transit port, Tanger Med plays a key role in African logistics, serving not only Morocco but also acting as a hub for cargo from across the continent. Surrounding the port is a designated Free Trade Zone with industrial parks that support a wide range of manufacturing sectors—including Africa’s second-largest automobile production (after South Africa), as well as aircraft components, agricultural products, textiles, and pharmaceuticals. Tanger Med Port underpins these industries with robust logistics infrastructure.

Ocean Network Express (ONE), the world’s sixth-largest container shipping company—31% owned by MOL—established a joint venture with local capital in Morocco in 2024. The new company has offices in both Casablanca and Tanger, aiming to expand its presence in the rapidly growing African maritime logistics market.

Africa’s abundant resources and growing population make efficient and stable logistics networks essential for both exports and imports. However, some areas still lack adequate infrastructure, limiting the continent’s economic potential. As maritime, air, and land logistics networks continue to develop, Africa’s economy and the lives of its people are expected to become increasingly prosperous.
