In the last blog post from MOL Mauritius, we introduced how the MOL Charitable Trust (MCT) and the MOL Mauritius International Fund (MMIF) were established in 2021 in response to the grounding of a Japanese bulk-carrier owned by a different Japanese shipping company.
Over the past 4 years, the MCT and MMIF have between them funded over 70 NGOs and project initiatives across Mauritius, contributing to environmental restoration and protection, sustainability, and community development, while impacting thousands of beneficiaries.
To help easily communicate the extent of our activities and impacts in Mauritius to stakeholders, we created the below visual tools.
Mauritius MOL Flag Map
The Mauritius MOL Flag Map depicts 64 MOL flags at NGO and/or project sites supported by MCT or MMIF funding. Certain flags mark NGOs or projects that have been awarded with multi-years funding or alternatively were awarded more than once in different years.
It can be easily seen that while MCT and MMIF support has naturally been concentrated on the Southeastern and Eastern regions of Mauritius most affected by the accident, NGOs and project initiatives across Mauritius have received support from the MCT and MMIF.
MCT Word Cloud
The below Word Cloud highlights the most frequently occurring meaningful words across the MCT Annual Reports covering projects implemented under CFP1 to CFP4.
The World Cloud helps re-enforce the understanding that environmental and sustainability concerns have strong localised social dimensions. Collaborating with, educating and empowering local communities is vital to achieve sustained outcomes.
You can find the MCT Annual Reports for CFP1-4 as well as more information about the individual NGOs and projects supported on the MOL for Mauritius website.
2026 and beyond
Looking ahead to 2026, the MCT’s 5th Call for Proposal for projects to be implemented in 2026 closed at the end of September, with over seventy funding applications received from NGOs all across Mauritius.
Over the last 2 months, MOL Mauritius, with the support of I61 Foundation, has undertaken screening and due-diligence,
including site visits, of the NGO and project applications to support decision making by the MCT’s committee of 7
Enforcers. The I61 Foundation will also support MCT with ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the selected NGOs and
projects during implementation phase.
The application evaluation process is almost complete, and selected NGOs and projects will be notified before the end of
this month.
With 2026 representing the fifth and final year of the MCT’s 5 years mandate, MOL has been reflecting upon our practical experience of implementing environmental and social activities in Mauritius, and how to integrate these activities and lessons learned with MOL’s global CSR activities. Going forwards, MOL Mauritius’ CSR activities will be closely aligned with MOL’s global sustainability management plan priority areas (Marine Environment; Next-generation Human Resources Development; and Addressing Local Community Challenges) and the creation of enhanced corporate value in the medium term.
MOL CEO Takashi Hashimoto succinctly articulated MOL’s approach in his internal CEO blog in October 2025:
We operate with the belief that cultivating strong relationships with society forms the foundation for a company’s
long-term growth. While we cannot shoulder excessive human or financial burdens that may impede corporate development,
we should aim to consistently pursue meaningful contributions within our capacity.
For MOL Mauritius, the question we must now seek to answer is how should we continue to make meaning contributions within our capacity?
In parallel with business development initiatives in Mauritius and the region to grow our capacity – which will be the subject of future MOL Mauritius blog posts - we will explore how to enhance collaboration between the various NGOs we support to share data and best practices, optimise resource allocation, and create synergies. We will also actively look to participate in value chain development where prospects exist to combine business models and social models to deliver both sustained impact and financial sustainability.
For now, we look forward to holding the MCT project award ceremony in January 2026 and adding new flags to the MOL Mauritius Flag Map!
