The Day We Encountered Kenya at EXPO2025! Kenya Day Experience Report

MOL is currently advancing a project called “Kenyan Workers to Japan” which introduces Kenyan talent to Japanese companies. Recently, we were honored to be invited by the Kenyan Embassy to participate in events related to Kenya Day at the Expo.

EXPO2025 is being held in Osaka from April 13 to October 13 this year. The National Days are special one-day events hosted by each of the 158 participating countries and regions. On these days, the Expo venue transforms into a vibrant showcase of that country’s culture—truly a magical experience.

Following the ceremony, students from Yusato Elementary School, which has ties with Kenya, performed a lively group rendition of “Jambo Bwana,” energizing the venue and participants. Traditional Kenyan dance music was then showcased, and with scenic projections of Kenya, the venue was completely immersed in Kenyan culture. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to receive them, but Kenya—being a major flower exporter—distributed 50,000 beautiful Kenyan roses at the Expo venue.

On the previous day, June 23, a “High-Level Business Forum” was held at the Osaka International Convention Center, hosted by the Kenyan government and supported by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and JETRO. This forum brought together Kenyan and Japanese exporters, investors, and government agencies to exchange views on trade, investment, and tourism opportunities in Kenya.

MOL’s Wellbeing Life Division, represented by Koike from the Foreign Talent Team, gave a presentation as a representative of the Japanese private sector. The presentation focused on introducing Kenyan talent to Japan (Labor Mobility) as a solution to social challenges in both countries. It drew significant interest and received high praise from attendees.
2023 marked the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Kenya. Our company, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, began service from Asia to Mombasa Port in 1926, and next year will mark our 130th anniversary.
Using Kenya as one of our gateway ports, we aim to build cooperative relationships with stakeholders and expand business in this historically connected and promising African region. Ultimately, we hope to contribute to regional economic development and address the global imbalance in labor distribution.
